Roadtrip

Hoofcase took a drive down to North Carolina on Saturday. On the way we took a little detour through Swoope, VA to get some beef and pork made from cows fed only rainbows and unicorns at Polyface Farms. What we love about this place is that they have spent no money trying to make it look good for us tourists. It’s a real farm, and it looks like it, and I appreciate that. They could use some help with a logo re-design, but we can leave it as Folk Art and move on. And Virginia is freaking gorgeous. Never new. Basically Virginia doesn’t really exist in our world, except for vintage “Virginia is for Lovers” t-shirts on hipster girls back in the Brooklyn days. It’s a great place to put right in the middle of your road trip.
Oh, and I spotted this sign in a gas station off the highway…make of it what you will.

Portland, Oregon: Pies
Posted on | July 21, 2010 | No Comments
I’ve been having a not-so-secret love affair with Portland for a few years now. There are a million reasons to be smitten with the place, mountains, great beer, hipsters with no insecurity, bikes, their pride in their loggers and strip clubs, rosemary bushes the size real freaking bushes, general dedication to weirdness and self expression, etc… Anyhow, going to start posting more about the place.
First up Random Order Coffeehouse. I’ve only been there once, and the coffee was great, but it’s what i didn’t have that keeps me wanting to go back. The pies. They have a glass case filled with the most beautiful pies I’ve ever seen. Sweet and savory. They are works of art and I’m ashamed every day that all I bought was coffee. Really, their pies look like the pies that your grandma never made. Next trip I’ll write a review. Or if you’re out in Portland, send me your review of their pies and we’ll post it.

Jeffery Deitch is now head honcho at MOCA, I have a buddy that used to work with him in NY when he ran Deitch Projects. The show was curated by Julian Schnabel with Tony Shafrazi. More info here at this other blog.
